Ikea, Ikea, I-keet

>> Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Ikea, Ikea,
Lovely, dear Ikea,
From your flat packs to your anchovy treat,
There's nothing half so sweet,
As Ikea, Ikea, I-keet.

Oh, there are things of wonder,
Of which men like to sing.
There are pretty sunsets and birds upon the wing,
But of the joys of nature,
None truly can compare,
With Ikea, Ikea, she of wonders beyond compare.
And Swedish meatballs.

Okay, I totally ripped that off from Barney Fife. Don't judge me. I've been sick.

1. meatballs
2. potatoes
3. lingonberry stuff

Pickapeppa Makes Ass Taste Like Filet Mignon!

>> Wednesday, January 28, 2009

1. nasty ass frozen meatballs
2. brown rice
3. Pickapeppa Sauce
4. carrots
5. hummus (Fresh & Easy) with mutant parsley leaf
6. side of Greek yogurt with honey

He made dinner last night. Spaghetti and meatballs. I detest these meatballs. They taste like ... nasty ass. I packed them for one reason, and one reason only. Okay two, no three reasons. One, they were already cooked and sitting there, so it was easy. Two, I've been dying to use my bone picks. Well, not dying, but you know. (want some? - you can get them here and here) Three, I freakin' love Pickapeppa and I'd forgotten I had a bottle. Pickapeppa makes even makes ass taste delicious!

Basketti & Meatballs

>> Saturday, April 26, 2008

I have a habit of picking up different lunch containers as I come across them whether I really need them or not. This particular container is a two peice plastic "tiffin" made in India that I found at a local dollar store. I really like this set - it's perfect for this type of meal.

1. spaghetti with a giant halved meatball and shaved parmesan
2. green salad with dressing in the small bottle

Here's what it looks like all stacked up and ready to go.

Super Complicated Envy Evoking Idea Stealing Bento

>> Wednesday, January 30, 2008

1. Ikea meatballs with gravy and a potato
2. Ikea lingonberry preserves
3. crepes filled with lemon curd
4. blueberries

Look at the tiny crepes! Aren't they nice? How very, very clever of me to totally steal that idea from Jeanine at The Healthy Lunchbox.

Try to tear your eyes away from the wonder that is the Ikea meatball and go take a look at what Jeanine does. She makes lunch for her kids out of mostly organic, mostly local and largely vegetarian food and manages to pack it in a way that doesn't generate any additional waste. And I think she might be posing nekkid in her profile picture. If I knew her in real life I'd probably call her stuck up and act like I didn't like her - or follow her around like a puppy.

Speaking of issues, I took a lot of crap for this lunch at work. Much of the time I eat at my desk, but this day I ate with the group. You would think I'd sculpted a scale model of the Eiffel Tower from a Vienna sausage instead of bringing in leftovers. Seriously people - Ikea meatballs. They come frozen in a bag. Gravy powder sold seperately. While it's true I don't make crepes every day they are really just pancakes with runnier batter. You just have to wonder what exactly people are eating that is "easier" or "quicker" than that! Probably they're just jealous that they don't have mad lunch packing skills like me and my new bff Jeanine. (oh my God do you think she'll read this??? hope she doesn't think I'm some psycho stalker woman!) Or maybe it was the mint ...

Dessert Crepes

1 egg
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of milk
1 cup of flour
1/8 cup of sugar
2 T melted butter
tiny pinch of salt

Blenderize until smooth and stick it in the fridge for 1/2 hour (or longer). Spoon a little bit of batter in the center of a heated non-stick pan and swirl it around dramatically while talking loudly to noone in particular in a fake French accent. Cook on medium high heat for about 30 seconds or so or until the edges start to pull up from the pan. Flip and cook another 15 seconds or so until you like the color. Lay the finished crepe flat on a plate and repeat. Makes something like 2376 tiny crepes. Small ones are easier to turn than big ones - plus you get more!

Liberate my Pocky!

>> Tuesday, November 27, 2007

1. BBQ sauced meatballs
2. roasted corn
3. itty bitty banana
4. pudding taste
5. cheese
6. apple slices
7. stick of strawberry Pocky in the lid compartment

Boo told me "roasted corn was everywhere!" when she opened up her lunch today. I thought that the edge of the silicone cup would press against the lid and hold everything in place. Guess I was wrong. More disturbing was that I put the fork in tine sides up and she wasn't able to slide open the compartment to liberate her Pocky. I guess she just ate the corn with her fingers. I got it out for her when I got home. Even let her eat it. I'm nice that way.

Counting Down to the Magical Days

>> Monday, November 19, 2007

We leave tomorrow night to go to the grandparent's for Turkey Day. Some of us (the ones who aren't the parents) are -quite- excited. Yep, one more magical day. Then a nice long magical flight, followed by an even more magical middle of the night drive. Then 2 days of feasting and reverse the process. Minus the magic of course :)

Anyway, this is Boo's last little bento until after Thanksgiving break. I think she enjoyed it.

1. meatballs in BBQ sauce
2. tiny potatoes
3. tinier apple
4. persimmon slices
5. custard ball
6. coconut bar cookies sandwiched with Nutella
7. sugar snaps

Meatball Mania

>> Wednesday, November 7, 2007

1. meatballs with 1 grape tomato
(and a Country Bear pick - what on earth was I thinking? Might as well sent him with a Hello Kitty bento too!)
2. hummus
3. matchstick veggies
4. naan
5. mango jelly
6. tiny pudding cup

I didn't cover the hummus thinking that the edges of the cup would press against the lid and keep everything in place. I hope I was right.

Good Day Sunshine

Meatballs are always a hit. I buy frozen mini "party" meatballs at Trader Joe's so they're super easy to prepare too! Since they are fully cooked I suppose you could just stick them in there frozen, but I think it's better to heat 'em and smash 'em a little in some paper towel so you can get the extra out.

1. naan
2. matchstick veggies (yellow carrot, baby carrots, asparagus and celery)
3. tiny pudding cup
4. meatballs
5. hummus

She didn't eat the yellow carrots or the celery because she "didn't know what they were". How can this be my child?
